Makaton Managers

Communication is a key part of being human. We use it to learn; to play; to ask for help and explain a problem. Not everyone finds communicating easy. This is where Makaton comes in.

Makaton is used by people that can make sounds and can hear.  It supports communication by reinforcing the spoken word with a whole vocabulary of hand gestures or ‘signs’ and symbols. Today over 100,000 children and adults, use Makaton symbols and signs.

Here at Wellstead, both staff and pupils are all learning to use Makaton Sign Language. Recently, the Makaton Foundation launched it’s ‘Sign of the Week’ initiative. Every Monday a new sign is presented at

Every class will have a printed copy of this sign and Miss Tizard, our Speech and Language School Assistant (SaLSA), will be encouraging everyone to learn that weekly sign and practise ones from the previous week.

Each class, from year 1 upwards, has a pupil Makaton Manager. Their role is to teach the new sign to the class and the teacher. At the end of the week, the Makaton Manager will report to Miss Tizard and give her the name of their classmate that deserves the much coveted Makaton Signer of the Week sticker. As we celebrate having a growth mindset, this sticker is awarded for effort, as much as achievement.

The pupils of Wellstead Primary School also have the opportunity to be on the Makaton Website. Pupils, for whom consent has been given, can be filmed making and saying the sign. This will be sent into  and they may be chosen to be on the sign of the week page!

For further information on Makaton, please check out the foundation’s website at  or come in and see Miss Tizard on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday after school in the Rainbow Room.  If these times are not convenient please feel free to email her at This email address is being protected from spambots.
